And While We Wait, We Wait

So let us be brave, friends, anchored & beached as the ships are
let us have bread & exchange our songs for such hopeful things
as another day amongst ourselves. I am free as you are free
to remark O how I will still remember you as free to pick a ginger-lily
which is a symbol of my pleasure in touching & knowing little things.
And when the sky is perched upon our home, my friends, I think
that we have always been a flock of sea-birds, a cluster of clams & again
let us have evenings for talking & nothing else.
I am small as you are full of joy to remark O but I will never be rid of myself
as a star might wish upon itself, as the water might only be consumed by itself,
as the deep terror has always been in response to O let me see beyond myself.
