“Hangover” appeared in Flint Hills Review (2006)
Joy the day dead for me
with a wink. Make it broken by dancing
each breath like a kite. If the buzz
of waking is poison, spit the stars back
into the sky. Hate me soft and slow
if you must. Laughter doesn’t balance a drunk
mind sulking towards breakfast.
Not when joy traffics your devil
smile and shames me with
spills. I have no other sin to offer today.
Just sleep me gone if you please.
Otherwise, sword the sun and burn me
earthbound with a slice.
It’s the only other remedy I know.
